DESCRIPTION:The Peaks of Otter Christmas Classic 5k is celebrating 41 years! Join runners and walkers of all ages and abilities for this central Virginia holiday tradition. Children are also invited to participate in the “Peaks Junior” 1 Mile and 1/4 Mile fun run. Proceeds support the Bedford Area YMCA. This event is known for its friendly faces\, caroling volunteers\, and fun post-race celebration. SUMMARY:Deck the Heels 5K Night Run (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Deck the Heels 5K is now a virtual event due to Governor Northam’s most recent order allowing gatherings of no more than 25 persons. We apologize for any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause and sincerely appreciate your continued support. Our hope is that you will continue to participate this year as a virtual runner or walker. If you had already registered for the “in person” event\, your entry has been transferred to our virtual event. \nHeld the second Saturday of December each year\, The Deck the Heels 5k is not only a fun race\, but\, it is also a huge holiday extravaganza with Santa and Mrs. Clause\, food\, hot chocolate\, music\, and more! And of course there’s medals for those who complete the race. The race begins and ends at the Claire Parker Foundation headquarters at 1019 9th Street Altavista\, VA.  All proceeds go to filling care boxes and toy boxes. \nGlow-in-the-Dark accessories will be available at packet pickup.  We encourage runners to “Deck” themselves out for this festive Christmas event.  \nThe Claire Parker Foundation was created in memory of our daughter\, Claire. We provide ongoing care and emotional support for children and families battling pediatric cancer.  To find out more about the work we do visit: claireparkerfoundation.org \nCOURSE:\nAs a virtual runner or walker you can participate from anywhere in the world. \nWe plan to have our traditional course setup for your convenience on Saturday December 12th or you can run your own course wherever you would like. \nParticipants are encouraged to use the RaceJoy app to track there speed\, distance\, upload their finish time\, and hear “cheers” along the way (cell phone required). There is no additional cost for the app. There will be light refreshments at Claire Parker Foundation HQ\, 1019 9th Street\, Altavista\, VA (location of our start and finish). The course will follow follow 7th street into the heart of downtown Altavista and pass the YMCA\, Town Hall\, Post Office\, and loop around Staunton River Public Library to come back down 7th street towards our foundation.  The course will be open 11am – 7pm. \nPlease be aware that our “virtual” course will not be closed to traffic. Participants should obey all traffic laws and proceed with caution paying particular attention to intersections and signage.
