SUMMARY:Medical Mountains 5K Run/Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine\, Student Advocates Association is pleased to present the Medical Mountains 5K. Proceeds of this race will benefit students who are currently attending medical school and experiencing extreme medical hardships. \nMost families have very limited financial resources during medical school. When someone in their family has a medical emergency it quickly becomes a financial burden. Some examples of what families and students have gone through include a daughter who has relapsed in her cancer diagnosis\, a wife and mother who had brain cancer and recently passed away\, and a student (who is also a husband and father) who had complications from Crohn’s disease which required surgery and a year off school. These are just a few examples from more recent years. Not only do these situations burden these families during medical school\, but even after graduation\, graduates still have a minimum of three years until they will experience any substantial income. This makes it nearly impossible to pay off any medical bills accrued at that time. Our hope is to be able to provide some financial relief to the approved applicants and help them to more freely move forward with their education. DESCRIPTION:The Charles O. Strickler Transplant Center at the University of Virginia is organizing their inaugural “Donor Dash” Friday April 23-Monday April 26\, 2021. While future Donor Dashes are planned to be in-person events\, this year we are planning a virtual event in recognition of the uncertainty of the current public health crisis and the impact it could have on everyone involved\, especially our organ transplant recipient family. \nOur Virtual 4 mile walk/run and a 1 mile “Transplant Trek” fun walk provides an opportunity for us to join together as a community to support the mission of the UVA Transplant Center (https://uvahealth.com/services/transplant) and to promote awareness of organ donation and the impact donors have on the lives of so many patients and families. \nWe are honoring the donors\, the recipients and all the families who have been touched by organ donation. Whether you can walk\, fun or cheer please join us! \nUntil 2017\, 40% of Virginians in need of an organ transplant were seeking care outside the commonwealth. UVA’s leadership decided that improving access to care for those in need of a transplant became of utmost importance. With a great team effort\, within two years\, UVA doubled the number of organ transplants performed per year. The goal is to continue on this growth and quality path until all Virginians in need can get a successful transplant at UVA. Currently over 2400 Virginians are waiting for a lifesaving transplant and approximately 40% of Virginia adults have not registered to be an organ donor. \nWhat’s a “Virtual” event?\nParticipating is easy! Once registered\, complete your event distance anytime/anywhere\, the weekend of Friday April 23 – Monday April 26\, 2021. SUMMARY:8th Annual High Bridge Half Marathon & 5k
DESCRIPTION:The town of Farmville in south central Virginia has been hailed as “America’s Crucible”. The site of one of the last battles of the War Between the States and one of the first critical moments in the Battle for Civil Rights in Education\, Farmville is truly the Heart of Virginia. Home to Green Front Furniture and a delightful historic commercial district filled with restaurants\, retail\, and galleries\, Farmville promises something for everyone who comes to spend a day\, a weekend\, or a lifetime.  \nThe historic High Bridge runs through the Heart of Virginia in Prince Edward and Cumberland Counties. Heralded as the largest bridge of its kind in the United States\, the High Bridge and the battle for control of it was a contributing factor to General Robert E. Lee’s surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in nearby Appomattox Courthouse. Today\, the bridge is the centerpiece of the 31-mile High Bridge Trail State Park that includes the historic commercial district of Farmville. \nThe race will be held on an out-and-back course beginning in Farmville Downtown at High Bridge Trail State Park Plaza.  The park is a rail to trail conversion that is wide\, level and has very little grade.  The trail surface consists of finely crushed\, well-packed limestone.  The half marathon will cross the historic High Bridge twice.  High Bridge is nearly a half mile long and towers 125 feet above the Appomattox River. \nRunners will enjoy on-course support with spirit groups\, music\, water stations\, and Port-O-Potties. Finsher medals will be presented to all Half Marathon finishers who complete their race during the designated time period of 4 hours.

This is a community event open to all people\, of all fitness levels\, from the novice to the seasoned athlete. The event concludes the EastLake Community Church Fall Jamboree. Come early and bring the whole family to experience a petting zoo\, laser tag\, bluegrass music\, free food\, a chili cook off and an adventure trail for the kids. Then enjoy a sunset race in the brisk fall air.
