DESCRIPTION:The Heart of Virginia Festival has been moved to September. As a result the annual Heart of Virginia 10k & 5K has moved to September. We look forward to continuing this Farmville tradition! \n10K Race Description (RUN ONLY): \nThe 10K begins at the Main Street Plaza on the High Bridge State Park Trail in Farmville\, Virginia. This out and back course runs in the direction of the old Farmville train station. Grade is relatively flat. Surface is fine\, crushed\, gravel. Timing and scoring of the 10K run will be provided. Both the 10K and the 5K events start together at 8:30am.  Medals will be presented to the top 3 overall male & female finishers and top finishers in each age category that participated in the 10K. Representing the United States at the Paris Olympic Games this past summer\, Hocker shocked everyone but himself by winning the Men’s 1\,500m with a thrilling finish. His time of 3:27.65 is now the Olympic record for the metric mile.\nOlympian Cole Hocker will give an inspirational presentation to the community on Thursday\, September 26th at E.C. Glass High School Auditorium at 6:00pm. The event is free and open to the public and a special opportunity for local sports teams.\nThe 23-year-old\, Indianapolis\, Indiana native\, holds multiple\, USA Track & Field\, national titles including four in the 1\,500m and one in the 3\,000m. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games\, Hocker finished sixth in the 1\,500m.

SUMMARY:10th Annual High Bridge Half Marathon & 5k
DESCRIPTION:The town of Farmville in south central Virginia has been hailed as “America’s Crucible”. The site of one of the last battles of the War Between the States and one of the first critical moments in the Battle for Civil Rights in Education\, Farmville is truly the Heart of Virginia. Home to Green Front Furniture and a delightful historic commercial district filled with restaurants\, retail\, and galleries\, Farmville promises something for everyone who comes to spend a day\, a weekend\, or a lifetime.  \nThe historic High Bridge runs through the Heart of Virginia in Prince Edward and Cumberland Counties. Heralded as the largest bridge of its kind in the United States\, the High Bridge and the battle for control of it was a contributing factor to General Robert E. Lee’s surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in nearby Appomattox Courthouse. Today\, the bridge is the centerpiece of the 31-mile High Bridge Trail State Park that includes the historic commercial district of Farmville. \nThe race will be held on an out-and-back course beginning in Farmville Downtown at High Bridge Trail State Park Plaza.  The park is a rail to trail conversion that is wide\, level and has very little grade.  The trail surface consists of finely crushed\, well-packed limestone.  The half marathon will cross the historic High Bridge twice.  High Bridge is nearly a half mile long and towers 125 feet above the Appomattox River. \nRunners will enjoy on-course support with spirit groups\, music\, water stations\, and Port-O-Potties. Finsher medals will be presented to all Half Marathon finishers who complete their race during the designated time period of 4 hours.

Proceeds from this event support Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County\, Inc (NHN) where our primary focus is to assist individuals in overcoming food insecurity by providing nutritious meals through food kitchens and selective shopping Food Warehouse. On May 5th\, 2016\, we started serving nutritious lunch meals to anyone who has a need for a meal that day during lunchtime. NHN Volunteers prep and serve lunches twice a week.

And of course there’s medals for those who complete the race. The race begins and ends at the Claire Parker Foundation headquarters at 1019 9th Street Altavista\, VA. We encourage runners to “Deck” themselves out for this festive Christmas event. \nWe are also pleased to announce the addition of the VIRTUAL Deck the Heels 5k for those that are unable to join us in person.
