Virtual participants are able to choose a 5k course and submit their time to our Results page. \nThe Claire Parker Foundation was created in memory of our daughter\, Claire. We provide ongoing care and emotional support for children and families battling pediatric cancer. SUMMARY:Medical Mountains 5K Run/Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine\, Student Advocates Association is pleased to present the Medical Mountains 5K. Proceeds of this race will benefit students who are currently attending medical school and experiencing extreme medical hardships. \nMost families have very limited financial resources during medical school. When someone in their family has a medical emergency it quickly becomes a financial burden. Some examples of what families and students have gone through include a daughter who has relapsed in her cancer diagnosis\, a wife and mother who had brain cancer and recently passed away\, and a student (who is also a husband and father) who had complications from Crohn’s disease which required surgery and a year off school. These are just a few examples from more recent years. Not only do these situations burden these families during medical school\, but even after graduation\, graduates still have a minimum of three years until they will experience any substantial income. This makes it nearly impossible to pay off any medical bills accrued at that time. Our hope is to be able to provide some financial relief to the approved applicants and help them to more freely move forward with their education. DESCRIPTION:The Charles O. Strickler Transplant Center at the University of Virginia is organizing their inaugural “Donor Dash” Friday April 23-Monday April 26\, 2021. While future Donor Dashes are planned to be in-person events\, this year we are planning a virtual event in recognition of the uncertainty of the current public health crisis and the impact it could have on everyone involved\, especially our organ transplant recipient family. \nOur Virtual 4 mile walk/run and a 1 mile “Transplant Trek” fun walk provides an opportunity for us to join together as a community to support the mission of the UVA Transplant Center (https://uvahealth.com/services/transplant) and to promote awareness of organ donation and the impact donors have on the lives of so many patients and families. \nWe are honoring the donors\, the recipients and all the families who have been touched by organ donation. Whether you can walk\, fun or cheer please join us! \nUntil 2017\, 40% of Virginians in need of an organ transplant were seeking care outside the commonwealth. UVA’s leadership decided that improving access to care for those in need of a transplant became of utmost importance. With a great team effort\, within two years\, UVA doubled the number of organ transplants performed per year. The goal is to continue on this growth and quality path until all Virginians in need can get a successful transplant at UVA. Currently over 2400 Virginians are waiting for a lifesaving transplant and approximately 40% of Virginia adults have not registered to be an organ donor. \nWhat’s a “Virtual” event?\nParticipating is easy! Once registered\, complete your event distance anytime/anywhere\, the weekend of Friday April 23 – Monday April 26\, 2021. SUMMARY:Medical Mountains 5K Run/Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine\, Student Advocates Association is pleased to present the Medical Mountains 5K. Proceeds of this race will benefit students who are currently attending medical school and experiencing extreme medical hardships. \nMost families have very limited financial resources during medical school. When someone in their family has a medical emergency it quickly becomes a financial burden. Some examples of what families and students have gone through include a daughter who has relapsed in her cancer diagnosis\, a wife and mother who had brain cancer and recently passed away\, and a student (who is also a husband and father) who had complications from Crohn’s disease which required surgery and a year off school. These are just a few examples from more recent years. Not only do these situations burden these families during medical school\, but even after graduation\, graduates still have a minimum of three years until they will experience any substantial income. This makes it nearly impossible to pay off any medical bills accrued at that time. Our hope is to be able to provide some financial relief to the approved applicants and help them to more freely move forward with their education. SUMMARY:Deck the Heels 5K Night Run (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Deck the Heels 5K is now a virtual event due to Governor Northam’s most recent order allowing gatherings of no more than 25 persons. We apologize for any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause and sincerely appreciate your continued support. Our hope is that you will continue to participate this year as a virtual runner or walker. If you had already registered for the “in person” event\, your entry has been transferred to our virtual event. \nHeld the second Saturday of December each year\, The Deck the Heels 5k is not only a fun race\, but\, it is also a huge holiday extravaganza with Santa and Mrs. Clause\, food\, hot chocolate\, music\, and more! And of course there’s medals for those who complete the race. The race begins and ends at the Claire Parker Foundation headquarters at 1019 9th Street Altavista\, VA.  All proceeds go to filling care boxes and toy boxes. \nGlow-in-the-Dark accessories will be available at packet pickup.  We encourage runners to “Deck” themselves out for this festive Christmas event.  \nThe Claire Parker Foundation was created in memory of our daughter\, Claire. We provide ongoing care and emotional support for children and families battling pediatric cancer.  To find out more about the work we do visit: claireparkerfoundation.org \nCOURSE:\nAs a virtual runner or walker you can participate from anywhere in the world. \nWe plan to have our traditional course setup for your convenience on Saturday December 12th or you can run your own course wherever you would like. \nParticipants are encouraged to use the RaceJoy app to track there speed\, distance\, upload their finish time\, and hear “cheers” along the way (cell phone required). DESCRIPTION:Support our Armed Forces and the National D-Day Memorial by participating in a patriotic themed 5K Run/Walk. On May 16\, 2020\, the National D-Day Memorial will still be hosting the Armed Forces Day 5K; however\, we have moved this event to a virtual race due to guidelines regarding large gatherings by the CDC. \nSo\, What Is A Virtual Race? \nFor years\, many races have offered a virtual runner option that allowed runners to participate no matter where they lived and to still support the race. Runners can sign up for the race\, post their times online after running a 5K\, and receive a 2020 Armed Forces Day 5K race shirt by mail. \nHow Do I Participate in the Virtual Armed Forces Day 5K? \nStep 1: Register to run or walk the virtual Armed Forces Day 5K at www.dday.org/armed-forces-day-5k. The registration fee will remain at $25 through race day. \nStep 2: Tell your friends\, family\, and co-workers about the race and explain why it is important to you. Invite them to sign up and run with you in groups of 10 or less). \nStep 3: On May 16 (or anytime on Armed Forces Day weekend)\, lace up your running shoes\, head outside or hop on your treadmill\, and walk or run to support our nation’s heroes past and present who defend our freedom! You can report your results to RunSignUp\, too. \nMost Importantly: Share with us on social media about why you signed up\, pictures of training and your 5K\, and more by using the hashtag #DDAYAFD5K.
