SUMMARY:8th Annual High Bridge Half Marathon & 5k
DESCRIPTION:The town of Farmville in south central Virginia has been hailed as “America’s Crucible”. The site of one of the last battles of the War Between the States and one of the first critical moments in the Battle for Civil Rights in Education\, Farmville is truly the Heart of Virginia. Home to Green Front Furniture and a delightful historic commercial district filled with restaurants\, retail\, and galleries\, Farmville promises something for everyone who comes to spend a day\, a weekend\, or a lifetime.  \nThe historic High Bridge runs through the Heart of Virginia in Prince Edward and Cumberland Counties. Heralded as the largest bridge of its kind in the United States\, the High Bridge and the battle for control of it was a contributing factor to General Robert E. Lee’s surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in nearby Appomattox Courthouse. Today\, the bridge is the centerpiece of the 31-mile High Bridge Trail State Park that includes the historic commercial district of Farmville. \nThe race will be held on an out-and-back course beginning in Farmville Downtown at High Bridge Trail State Park Plaza.  The park is a rail to trail conversion that is wide\, level and has very little grade.  The trail surface consists of finely crushed\, well-packed limestone.  The half marathon will cross the historic High Bridge twice.  High Bridge is nearly a half mile long and towers 125 feet above the Appomattox River. \nRunners will enjoy on-course support with spirit groups\, music\, water stations\, and Port-O-Potties. Finsher medals will be presented to all Half Marathon finishers who complete their race during the designated time period of 4 hours.

DESCRIPTION:Show your support for our Armed Forces and the National D-Day Memorial by participating in a patriotic themed Virtual 5K Run/Walk. Our annual event is typically held Armed Forces Day weekend on the campus of the National D-Day Memorial. Due to continued COVID restrictions and concern for the health of our staff\, volunteers\, and visitors this year’s event will be virtual. By participating virtually\, you can choose your own 5K course and complete the distance when it is convenient for you. We anticipate participation from across the country. \nOur virtual event will be enhanced by the RaceJoy App. Participants will be able to track their speed\, distance\, and hear inspirational / educational cheers while using the app race weekend! Use of the app is not required. But\, we highly recommend it!

DESCRIPTION:The Charles O. Strickler Transplant Center at the University of Virginia is organizing their inaugural “Donor Dash” Friday April 23-Monday April 26\, 2021. While future Donor Dashes are planned to be in-person events\, this year we are planning a virtual event in recognition of the uncertainty of the current public health crisis and the impact it could have on everyone involved\, especially our organ transplant recipient family. \nOur Virtual 4 mile walk/run and a 1 mile “Transplant Trek” fun walk provides an opportunity for us to join together as a community to support the mission of the UVA Transplant Center (https://uvahealth.com/services/transplant) and to promote awareness of organ donation and the impact donors have on the lives of so many patients and families. \nWe are honoring the donors\, the recipients and all the families who have been touched by organ donation. Whether you can walk\, fun or cheer please join us! \nUntil 2017\, 40% of Virginians in need of an organ transplant were seeking care outside the commonwealth. UVA’s leadership decided that improving access to care for those in need of a transplant became of utmost importance. With a great team effort\, within two years\, UVA doubled the number of organ transplants performed per year. The goal is to continue on this growth and quality path until all Virginians in need can get a successful transplant at UVA. Currently over 2400 Virginians are waiting for a lifesaving transplant and approximately 40% of Virginia adults have not registered to be an organ donor. \nWhat’s a “Virtual” event?\nParticipating is easy! SUMMARY:Medical Mountains 5K Run/Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine\, Student Advocates Association is pleased to present the Medical Mountains 5K. Proceeds of this race will benefit students who are currently attending medical school and experiencing extreme medical hardships. \nMost families have very limited financial resources during medical school. When someone in their family has a medical emergency it quickly becomes a financial burden. Some examples of what families and students have gone through include a daughter who has relapsed in her cancer diagnosis\, a wife and mother who had brain cancer and recently passed away\, and a student (who is also a husband and father) who had complications from Crohn’s disease which required surgery and a year off school. These are just a few examples from more recent years. Not only do these situations burden these families during medical school\, but even after graduation\, graduates still have a minimum of three years until they will experience any substantial income. This makes it nearly impossible to pay off any medical bills accrued at that time. Our hope is to be able to provide some financial relief to the approved applicants and help them to more freely move forward with their education. SUMMARY:Deck the Heels 5K Night Run (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Deck the Heels 5K is now a virtual event due to Governor Northam’s most recent order allowing gatherings of no more than 25 persons. We apologize for any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause and sincerely appreciate your continued support. Our hope is that you will continue to participate this year as a virtual runner or walker. If you had already registered for the “in person” event\, your entry has been transferred to our virtual event. \nHeld the second Saturday of December each year\, The Deck the Heels 5k is not only a fun race\, but\, it is also a huge holiday extravaganza with Santa and Mrs. Clause\, food\, hot chocolate\, music\, and more! And of course there’s medals for those who complete the race. The race begins and ends at the Claire Parker Foundation headquarters at 1019 9th Street Altavista\, VA.  All proceeds go to filling care boxes and toy boxes. \nGlow-in-the-Dark accessories will be available at packet pickup.  We encourage runners to “Deck” themselves out for this festive Christmas event.  \nThe Claire Parker Foundation was created in memory of our daughter\, Claire.
