In previous years\, this event has successfully raised funds for colon cancer awareness\, education\, and screenings. Unfortunately\, this past Christmas\, our clinic building suffered extensive smoke damage due to a nearby fire. \nAs we work to RISE and REBUILD\, we are pivoting our efforts to ensure our patients continue to receive care at alternative locations. DESCRIPTION:This run and walk is for anyone who has been impacted by colon cancer because NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE. Survivors\, current battlers\, caregivers\, family members\, friends\, coworkers\, sisters\, husbands\, mothers\, or anyone who wants to increase access to healthcare and screening sign up to help change the statistics. \nColon Cancer screening is one of the most underused ways to save someone’s life from cancer that exists. Stage one colon cancer has over a 90% survival rate but colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US. Lack of access to healthcare and early screening measures but 60% of these deaths can be avoided with screening. 76% of uninsured have not had a colon cancer screening and lack access to proper medical care. \nThe FREE CLINIC OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA\nThe mission of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia is to ensure high-quality\, compassionate\, and comprehensive healthcare for every member of our community. SUMMARY:Medical Mountains 5K Run/Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine\, Student Advocates Association is pleased to present the Medical Mountains 5K. Proceeds of this race will benefit students who are currently attending medical school and experiencing extreme medical hardships. \nMost families have very limited financial resources during medical school. When someone in their family has a medical emergency it quickly becomes a financial burden. Some examples of what families and students have gone through include a daughter who has relapsed in her cancer diagnosis\, a wife and mother who had brain cancer and recently passed away\, and a student (who is also a husband and father) who had complications from Crohn’s disease which required surgery and a year off school. These are just a few examples from more recent years. Not only do these situations burden these families during medical school\, but even after graduation\, graduates still have a minimum of three years until they will experience any substantial income. This makes it nearly impossible to pay off any medical bills accrued at that time. Our hope is to be able to provide some financial relief to the approved applicants and help them to more freely move forward with their education.
